Clarens - The "Jewel" of the Eastern Free State.

 Introduction

Clarens is definitely a highly sought after holiday destination for both local and International tourists.

This small town is within easy driving distance (3-4 hours) from most major cities and International airports that makes Clarens accessible to visitors who wish to stay for a day or two or even a week or longer.

While Clarens has grown in huge leaps and bounds over the last ten or so years, nothing can prepare visitors that venture into this part of the world for the first time, to the amazing natural beauty and tranquility of Clarens.

The beautiful mountain setting with it's mild climate is one of the many attractions that brings people from all walks of life to Clarens that seem to find that "quiet spot" and peace here in Clarens. Situated in the "Brandwater Kom", or directly translated - "the Firewater Basin", Clarens has been part of the South African history and heritage for a long time.

Clarens is known as the Art Capital of the Free State and for good reason. There is a very good selection of local, national and international art works and artists that call Clarens their home. With a multitude of Art Galleries to choose from, there is definitely something to please even the most distinguished guests.

While Clarens has mostly been a tourist town for most of it's history, the Highlands Water SchemeAsh River Outlet near Clarens was probably one of the most significant changes or events that made Clarens famous internationally.

This brought many international people here that worked on the water scheme in some way or another. They build a new suburb just for the people working on the water scheme. Although Clarens was not the only town that reaped benefits from this "major income generating machine", it probably showed the biggest move forward towards tourism and attracting people to the natural beauty and hospitality that has been part of Clarens since the age of the Dinosours.

People started visiting Clarens in small and mostly international groups, with the main attraction being the water scheme. Or more specific, the outlet of the main tunnel carrying water from Lesotho and delivering it to the Ash River.

Accommodation in Clarens was at the time not in huge demand as there were some establishments that catered for groups of people that wanted to stay overnight. Most of these groups did just that. They came today, saw what they came for, and were gone tomorrow.

But the beauty and serenity that the natural surrounding area had, had an impact on the people that visited Clarens, and soon more and more people were coming to visit the small town. Accommodation started to bulge at the seams and the existing motels were asking people to open their homes to visitors for a fee.

Golden Gate Brandwag HotelAlthough Golden Gate has been around for a long time, Clarens had become the new "place to be".

Artists wanted to establish themselves here, not only because of the opportunities that presented themselves here, but also because they felt a certain connection with the environment.

Clarens now boasts many Art Galleries. Most of these are privately owned by the artist themselves, but some have established themselves as outlets for some of the best artists in South Africa, and Clarens has established itself as a leader of art and artists.
